New College of Florida graduated 197 students Friday, May 24 the largest in the history of the school.

The American Jewish Committee hosted their first AJC Summer Lunch and Learn of the season Wednesday, May 29 at Michael's On East to educate the public on Jewish Catholic relations. Guest speaker Rabbi Noam Marans flew in from New York to discuss the topic 'A New Pope and the Future of Catholic-Jewish Relations,' at the fifth summer series. More than 150 people attended the luncheon and participated in a question and answer session after the talk.

Families got together at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron for the 21st Annual Race Around Lido Monday, May 27 to raise funds for Luffing Lassies, a women's sailing group, and to enjoy the Memorial Day Holiday. Approximately 80 people took their sailboats and calculated how much time it would take for them to get from the North beach to the sailing squadron. The team with the closest estimate won the race.

Second graders at Out-of-Door Academy crossed the mulch Thursday, May 23 as a symbolic gesture of the lower level entering the higher-level building next year. Third graders crossed the mulch on Tuesday, May 21 but the second graders - next year's third graders - will be the first second graders to cross the mulch and be in the new building. Out-of-Door Academy donated the left over food to the Salvation Army. Approximately 38 children played games and later crossed the courtyard as parents snapped photographs.

Pine View students packed the dance floor Saturday, May 18, at the Municipal Auditorium for the traditional Cobalt Dance. The dance that was started as a potluck dinner in a chemistry classroom has grown tremendously since the 1970s. Students still uphold the tradition of the Pine Cone Awards and hand them out to classmates with quirky talents. Juniors put on the dance for the seniors and chose an Italian theme for Cobalt 2013.

Community members joined hands Saturday, May 18 on Siesta Key beach as a symbol of their support for the protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife and fisheries. Supporters voiced their concern about damage that happens due to offshore oil drilling accidents, hydraulic fracturing, the Alberta tar sands, mountain top removal mining, and about coal fired power plants. Forty-two people joined hands for the Hands Across the Sand national movement.

Children from all over Sarasota County participated in the 2013 Sarasota Kiwanis Spelling Bee Program Friday, May 17 at the Lee Wetherington Boys and Girls Club. More than 100 third and fourth graders in bright yellow t - shirts competed to show off their skills and win one of three cash prizes. Booker High School and Sarasota High School Key Club sold pizza for $1 a slice and parents quizzed children in preparation for the spelling bee.
