Citizen Assist: A marine patrol officer responded to a report of boats anchored too close to shore. When the officer arrived at the scene, he spotted two boats anchored about 50 yards off the beach and spoke with one owner. The owner said he and the other boating party were there to visit friends and were swimming to shore. The officer did not observe the boats to be in any violation of local or state laws, so both were allowed to go about their business.

Citizen Assist: A woman called in a missing person report to advise officers her teenage son went for a walk on the beach about an hour prior and had not returned. Dispatch described the boy to officers, and one officer on beach patrol said he believed he just saw the missing boy on the beach. The officer on the beach located the boy shortly after and returned him to his mother.
9:04 a.m., 5400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Citizen Assist: A man walked into the Longboat Key Police Department to request help with a civil matter. The man said he arranged to sell his boat to another individual for $6,000. But the buyer could not front all the cash at once, so the two agreed payments could be made over six months. The seller received $1,700 a couple of days before the buyer showed up at the seller’s house at 9 p.m. to demand his money back. After the seller said he would be keeping the money to pay for the time he wasted trying to sell to the man, the buyer “threatened” the seller by saying he would be hearing from an attorney. The officer said, though it was suspicious for the man to show up at night, this was not a police matter and the two needed to handle this in civil court.
1:11 p.m., 3500 block of Fair Oaks Lane
Welfare Check: A man called the police to ask for a welfare check since he could not reach his mother via phone for several hours. A Longboat Key officer responded to the woman’s house and determined she was unaware of the several missed calls because she had left her phone on silent after church. She said everything was fine, so the officer reported back to the woman’s son to let him know what happened.
10:45 a.m., 800 block of Longboat Club Road
Service Call: An officer was dispatched to the beach to investigate a suspicious object that washed ashore. A United States Coast Guard officer called dispatch to investigate a large yellow tub-like object on the beach. The responding officer located the 20-foot-long metal object that appeared to be from a cargo ship. In a post on Longboat Key’s Instagram page, the town said this object was a pipeline pontoon that was likely used for working on underwater structures. Public Works and the Coast Guard were notified of the situation to coordinate removal.
11 a.m., 2500 Gulf of Mexico Drive
Citizen Assist: A citizen called police to report he was running across a crosswalk and was nearly struck by a vehicle at the intersection. The man was not injured and said there was no collision, but he provided the officer with a photo of the vehicle. The officer tracked down the vehicle’s owner through the license plate and spoke to the owner. She said she cleared the lanes before the man ran through the crosswalk, but she still stopped to ask if he was okay and left the scene after the man signaled he was fine. Since there was no collision and no one was injured, the officer closed the case.
8:11 p.m., 3100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Suspicious Person: While finishing up at an unrelated incident, an officer noticed a man with a bicycle and backpack sleeping near a side street off of Gulf of Mexico Drive. The officer approached the man and asked if he was okay. The man said everything was fine and he was just taking a quick nap before heading home. He said he worked at a nearby resort and was heading northbound to go home. After the officer spoke to the man, the man continued north.
