'Gershwin with a Twist'

Pianist and vocalist Brian Gurl and vocalist Michele Pruyn, along with a supporting band, honor the music of American composer George Gershwin, with unique — sometimes humorous — arrangements. Expect fine piano playing, vocal harmonies and plenty of surprises.

 

"Masterworks 5: Maestro"

The Sarasota Orchestra welcomes two guests for its fifth Masterworks series. Veteran conductor Neeme Järvi leads the orchestra through a program of musical heavy-hitters, including Johannes Brahms’ “Tragic Overture in D Minor,” Wilhelm Stenhammar’s “Piano Concerto No. 1” and Richard Strauss’ iconic and cinematic “Also sprach Zarathustra.”

Joining Järvi and the orchestra is accomplished Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand, who was the youngest person ever to be decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the country’s Royal Medal Litteris et Artibus for outstanding service to the arts. Runs through Feb. 21.

 

Damn Jam Band Day

Piff the Magic Dragon

Sinister Monk and Hold the Effin Jam! Release

JDub's Brewing Co. celebrates the release of its newest beer, Hold the Effin Jam! The beer is a 9.5% ABV imperial brown ale, made with bananas and peanut butter — a drink fit for The King. To keep the party going, the brewery will also re-release bottles of its Sinister Monk, a 12.2% ABV Belgian imperial stout for $17 per 750 mL bottle. Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota presents the Akropolis Quintet. Consisting of oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon, the group is hailed for its imagination and musicianship. The group will perform works by Debussy, French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau and a work written for Akropolis in 2013 by composer Joel Puckett.

 

The Bird Tribe with Emily Ross
