Summer Circus Spectacular

The Ringling and the Circus Arts Conservatory join forces for their annual Summer Circus Spectacular in the Historic Asolo Theater. Ringmaster Ashley Vargas, a veteran of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey and circuses around the world, presides over a showcase of jugglers, roller skaters, hand balancers and a clown she happens to be married to: Davis Vassallo. For $5 more, make it a circus day and tour The Ringling’s Historic Circus Galleries and Tibbals Learning Center, which contains a miniature circus of 42,000 pieces built by Howard Tibbals. Runs through Aug. 8.

The Soundbox Fellowship Program teams up with Sarasota Music Archive for a lecture recital featuring Soundbox resident artists Sophia Szokolay (violin) and Baron Fenwick (piano). The two will hold a musical conversation about how the lives of composers and musicians inform their performances and compositions. The program will include a new work by Soundbox composer faculty Marc Migó.

Asolo Repertory Theatre continues its summer tradition of staging a family-oriented musical with “The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition.” Follow Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion on the yellow brick road to family entertainment. The hourlong show runs through Aug. 8.

A New Play National Rolling Network premiere by playwright Tate Elizabeth Hanyok, "Dog Mom" is being produced by regional theaters in Portland, Oregon, Sunnyvale and Sacramento, California and Sarasota's own Florida Studio Theatre. Directed by Nancy Rominger, "Dog Mom" follows a hardnosed New Yorker whose heart begins to melt after she fosters a stray dog. Runs through Aug. 2.

As the construction cranes loom over downtown Sarasota this summer, the sleepy town of Venice 18 miles to the south looks more appealing than ever. There’s no sign to be seen of the destruction Hurricane Ian left at the Venice Theatre in September 2022. Kick up your heels with Venice Theatre’s production of “Head Over Heels." Set to songs by the Go-Gos, “Head Over Heels” follows a royal family as it tries to save its royal kingdom. Runs through Aug. 8.

In honor of World Mangrove Day, Tania Vergara Dance Theater is performing its contemporary piece, “HuMangrove,” which won the audience choice award at the 2025 Squeaky Wheel Fringe Festival. Formerly known as Endedans Contemporary Ballet, the company was founded by Tania Vergara in Cuba in 2002 and revived in Sarasota in 2023. Using dance, music and poetry, “HuMangrove” explores how humans and mangroves are linked through visible and invisible networks.

Praise the Lord! Reverend Billy’s back in town. Joining him will be Steve Arvey, the Chicago-born guitarist, singer and songwriter known for his slide guitar work. Reverend Billy, whose last name is Wirtz, is celebrated for his piano mastery and deep understanding of vintage blues, R&B and boogie-woogie traditions. Rounding out the band are Anne Van Atta on bass and Sandi Greco on drums.
