‘The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition’

Asolo Repertory Theatre continues its summer tradition of staging a family-oriented musical with “The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition.” Follow Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion on the yellow brick road to family entertainment. The hourlong show runs through Aug. 8.

A New Play National Rolling Network premiere by playwright Tate Elizabeth Hanyok, "Dog Mom" is being produced by regional theaters in Portland, Oregon, Sunnyvale and Sacramento, California and Sarasota's own Florida Studio Theatre. Directed by Nancy Rominger, "Dog Mom" follows a hardnosed New Yorker whose heart begins to melt after she fosters a stray dog. Runs through Aug. 2.

Vincente Minelli’s 1958 romantic musical comedy won nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Minelli. Based on a 1944 novella by the legendary French novelist Collette, it stars Leslie Caron as a young woman being groomed to be a courtesan during the Belle Epoque era in Paris. Maurice Chevalier singing “Thank Heavens for Little Girls” is worth the price of admission.

There’s no Sarasota Improv Festival taking place at Florida Studio Theatre this summer due to construction, but FST is booking some of the top acts from across the country that would normally be at the festival for their own gigs. One of these is Orlando’s “Forgotten Broadway,” whose name is a nod to the Off Broadway show “Forbidden Broadway.” Continues Aug. 1.

Anything goes at at Luke Manual's Dingbat Theatre, whose no-holds-barred playbook seems intentionally designed to offend parents and anyone of a conservative ilk. That’s why Dingbat’s version of “Schoolhouse Rock! Live” promises to be outrageous and entertaining. Runs through Aug. 23.

Katherine Michelle Tanner's Tree Fort Productions celebrates the 100th birthday of Marilyn Monroe, who once sang a sultry rendition of “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. The fete includes a screening of the film, “Some Like It Hot,” starring Monroe, Tony Curtis and Walter Matthau. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in Monroe style. So bring out your paste jewelry or your real gems if you believe that “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

Artistic giants walk among us in Sarasota County, and one of them is octogenarian Clyde Butcher, known for his massive black-and-white landscape photographs. Butcher himself is to modest to call himself the cultural descendant of Ansel Adams, but many others do. He’s also walking in the footsteps of Marjory Stoneman Douglas with his relentless defense of Florida’s Everglades. Butcher will be on hand to autograph his books and discuss his art for sale exclusively at the galleries he runs with his family. The latest exhibit, “The Land We Share,” spans decades and geographic regions and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the U.S.

During the past half-century, Lynn Goldsmith’s photographs of celebrities and nature have been featured in magazines and have been the subject of 17 books, including “Patti Smith: Before Easter After.” Goldsmith’s work is also held in the collections of numerous private collectors and museums, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Now, her photos are featured in an indoor and outdoor exhibition at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Runs through Sept. 8.

If it’s the dog days of summer, it’s time for Wednesday Jazz Happy Hour at Selby Library sponsored by Sarasota Music Archive. This week’s show features Matthew Frost, a jazz pianist who has played everywhere from the St. Regis Resort on Longboat Key to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Joining Frost are Jack Berry on bass and Douglas Rogells on drums.
