New books will send tongues wagging

Sue-Ellen Welfonder's passions: Scotland. The paranormal. Dogs. Welfonder, a Longboat Key resident, wishes dogs everywhere were as beloved as her Jack Russell terrier, Em. So, she has contributed a story, 'A Man, a Woman and Haggis' to 'Tails of Love,' an anthology of never published stories from 10 authors. Part of the authors' proceeds will go to the Animal Adoption Foundation. Tempted for more reading material? Welfonder also has out a new Scottish historical romance novel, 'A Highlander's Temptation.'

Wine glass still half full at Harry's wine tastings

No whining: Harry's Continental Kitchens won't be holding a wine tasting this Thursday, Jan. 7. But you can keep 'wining': The restaurant is now holding its wine tastings on Wednesdays, the first of which will take place Jan. 6. This Wednesday's wine tasting will benefit the Longboat Key Garden Club. Cost is $10. Call 383-0777.

McKitrick's tournament record shoots up

Arlene McKitrick, of Longboat Key, increased her championship record to 154 tournament victories when she won the American Seniors Golf Association 2009 Stroke Play Championship in December, at the Naples Grande Resort and Club, in Naples. She shot 76,76, and last month McKitrick won the International Senior Championship held in Bermuda.

Happy Birthday, Dora!

Okay, so she's another year older. But Longboaters know that having Longboat Observer Senior Editor Dora Walters on the scene never gets old. On Jan. 4, Walters celebrated her birthday with cake at the office and, ever the reporter, then headed off to the Longboat Key Town Commission meeting to snap photos. When she got up to take a crowd shot, the group surprised her by singing 'Happy Birthday.' One person in attendance asked her if she was turning 39 again. Her response: 38.

Sarasota Yacht Club hosted a Hanukkah dinner Sunday, Dec. 27, at the club. Both kids and adults alike celebrated side-by-side, with Hanukkah-themed puzzles to complete and a traditional Jewish feast to eat.

Observer to host candidates forum

The Longboat Observer will host a forum next week for District 1 commission candidates who will face off in a preliminary election Jan. 26. The candidates, Mayor Lee Rothenberg, Lee Pokoik and Lynn Larson, will be present to answer the public's questions. The forum, open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts' cultural/media room, 6860 Longboat Drive South. For information call 383-5509.

Dec. 15 Safe and secure 8:50 p.m. - 500 block of Kingfisher Lane. Suspicious Circumstance. A woman reported a suspicious pickup truck leaving the area. Police responded and could not find the truck but found an unlocked sliding-glass door at a nearby residence. Nothing was stolen and the house was secured.
