Birds of prey circling overhead typically aren't a sign of something good. But in the world of murder mysteries, they are the sign of an intriguing storyline about to unfurl.
At the Bird Key Women's Association meet-up on May 13, attendees discussed the book "Scavenger Tides," penned by author Susan Hanafee. They also took the chance to chat with the author herself, who joined the group to share insights into the characters and writing process.
The opportunity came about through Hanafee's friendship with Bird Key resident Joan Love, who hosted the gathering. They connected while Love was working in the oncology department of the nearby hospital, helping coordinate visits from therapy dogs and similar activities.
"We enjoy one another's company and are both authors, so we have a lot in common," Love said when introducing Hanafee to the group.
Hanafee has written four books in the mystery series following the character of Leslie Elliott. She has also penned several others, including collections of short stories inspired by Florida living and a few children's books, "Rachael's Island Adventures."
Set in Sarasota, "Scavenger Tides" follows Elliott as she stumbles upon a flock of raptors making their way into a neighboring house, where she is met with a grisly scene. Tensions only escalate as body parts suddenly appear — and even more concerningly disappear — from along the shores of the gulf.
What unfurls is a murder mystery with plenty of nods to the Southwest Florida city, from mention of Mote Marine to debates on the evolution of real estate.
Hanafee self-publishes her works, relying on her experience as a former reporter with The Indianapolis Star and her team of editors.
Attendees questioned her about the process of self-publishing, and Hanafee said it takes dedication to tackle everything from crafting an outline to selecting the cover art. But it comes down to a labor of love for the author.
As the daughter of an attorney and a school teacher, she grew up with a love for books and reading. In fact, her father penned a book, but as Hanafee recalls, it ended up being used as scrap paper.
She brought with her a T-shirt that warns, "Be careful or you could end up in my novel," and Hanafee said there is some truth to it. She often draws inspiration from colorful characters she meets in Florida.
She makes a habit of writing almost every day, taking her outline and character inspiration and letting them blossom through her fingertips. She lets the storyline flow where it naturally goes, but one guideline she tries to follow is that any mystery should be fair to the reader. There should be enough hints along the way for the observant to hazard a guess, with the odd twist and red herring to keep things interesting.
Between books, she regularly publishes blogs on her website, SusanHanafee.com.
She has new projects as well, including a new mystery she co-wrote with her grandson that is scheduled to drop in September. Hanafee said working on the project together was a bonding experience she treasures, one that has helped her better understand his perspective.
Without giving too much away, Hanafee said a future book may also be on the way, inspired by a Palmer Ranch retirement facility.
"Scavenger Tides" is available in print and electronic formats through BookBaby.com and other online retailers.
