UPDATE: The Sarasota Police Department announced Bahia Vista Street has reopened again as of 5:34 p.m.
Previously: Authorities responded to a gas leak at the intersection of Bahia Vista Street and East Avenue today, an incident that twice closed an extended road segment in midtown Sarasota.
The county received a report regarding the gas leak at 2:16 p.m., according to a spokesperson. Representatives from TECO Peoples Gas were on scene working to repair the leak.
The Sarasota Police Department closed Bahia Vista Street from Tamiami Trail to Tuttle Avenue during the repairs, reopening the road after the leak was mitigated at 2:59 p.m.
At 4:21 p.m., the Sarasota Police Department announced the segment of Bahia Vista had been closed again so authorities could make a more permanent fix to the gas leak.
After the initial leak, the county said the Midtown Plaza shopping center was evacuated as a precautionary measure. There were no injuries reported.
