Nik's Pick: Heather Hutchison: ‘Forever Changes’ Opening Reception
Be the first to see the trademark style of artist Heather Hutchison in her latest exhibit, “Forever Changes” at Alfstad& Contemporary. Hutchison uses thin sheets of Plexiglas mounted on frames of birch plywood and covers them in duct tape or beeswax to create pieces that look like seascapes at first glance, but upon further inspection appear to be more complex examples of the depths of color.

Schubert’s famous “Trout” Quintet is a joyous, infectious work of optimism that is sure to keep Sarasota Orchestra fans smiling. Also on the lineup is Bowen’s “Fantasia,” during which the viola will take center stage. Rounding out the concert is Penn’s “Capriccio” for tuba and marimba, an energetic piece that allows the two instruments to complement each other beautifully.

The French are known for romance, so it’s no wonder Giacomo Puccini set his iconic opera in the City of Light. The story begins when Cavalier Des Grieux falls in love with the enchanting Manon Lescaut at first sight (he falls so hard, in fact, that he prevents her from entering the convent her father had planned to send her to). Drama ensues — hang on to your seat.
