A Sarasota man who highway patrol troopers said was driving at more than 140 miles an hour in a high-performance car was arrested just before midnight and taken to Sarasota County Jail on a charge connected with Florida’s super-speeder laws.

Isreal Jacob Acosta was taken to jail immediately after the 11:56 p.m. arrest on Friday.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the man was driving a Ford Mustang GT at 142 mph on Interstate 75, northbound just north of Fruitville Road.

He was charged with dangerous excessive speed. Enacted in July 2025, Florida’s super-speeder law applies to cases of driving more than 50 mph over the speed limit (which is 70 mph in that area), the offense is classified as a misdemeanor criminal case. Ordinary speeding tickets are generally considered civil.

In September, 2025, Sarasota Police stopped a driver on the Ringling Causeway driving 88 mph, resulting in a similar charge.

First-offense sentences can be $500 fine and or 30 days in jail.
