An altercation between family members ended with the stabbing death of a 50-year-old man New Year's Day.

Sarasota Police arrested 35-year-old Jorge Macias at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, after which he admitted to stabbing Johnny Luna multiple times following an argument at a party on the 2000 block of Fifth Street. Detectives found a set of kitchen knives matching the alleged murder weapon during a search of the suspect's home at 1743 Ninth St.

According to reports, Macias fled his residence after a fight with family members. He attended the party on Ninth Street soon after to explain his actions, but became angry after an argument with several people at the party, including Luna.

Officers responded to the scene, but failed to revive Luna. Emergency personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene of the crime.

Police have charged Macias with second degree murder, and he is currently being held in the Sarasota County Jail without bond.

Earlier: The Sarasota Police Department began a homicide investigation this morning after discovering the body of 50-year-old Johnny Luna in the 2000 block of Fourth Street, according to a news release.

Emergency officials attempted to revive the man after receiving a call at 4:25 a.m. Police have not released any further information as they continue the investigation.
