Web Year in Review: May 2013, 2013 FCAT scores released

The Florida Department of Education has released some results of the 2013 FCAT 2.0 Writing and third grade FCAT 2.0 Reading and Mathematics assessments.

According the Florida Department of Education, the FCAT 2.0 measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, which specify what Florida students are expected to know and perform.

During the next two years, Florida will transition to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and mathematics.

The FCAT 2.0 Writing grades student performance on a scale from a low of 1.0 to a high of 6.0. The percentage of students scoring at 3.5 and above is used to measure school grades.

In grade 10, Sarasota County had the third highest percentage (69%) of students scoring 3.5 and above statewide, trailing Broward County students (70%) and Palm Beach (77%).

In grade 8, Sarasota had the third highest percentage (66%), tying Gilchrist and Hillsborough counties, and trailing Sumter County (72%) and Liberty County (72%).

In grade 4, Sarasota had the second best percentage, tying Sumter, St. Johns, Palm Beach, and trailing Union County (81%).
