Reports of flooding in Big Cat Habitat and Camino Real came after more than 10 inches of rain fell in the Sarasota-Bradenton area in July — which was nearly double the 4.7 inches that fell in the the same span in 2012.

But August is on track for below-average rainfall, according to preliminary monthly climate data retrieved from the National Weather Service. Through Aug. 18, Sarasota-Bradenton has recieved 5.2 inches of rainfall, which, if the average rainfall-per-day remains steady, would result in less than nine inches this month.

Last August, the NWS recorded about 9.6 inches of rainfall for the Sarasota-Bradenton region.
