EAST COUNTY — As residents of the Cascades community gathered for their annual Memorial Day celebration last weekend, they also paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes with a special flagpole dedication and flag-raising ceremony.

Sunday, May 27, the Cascades Men’s Coffee Group dedicated a new flagpole at the community’s entrance, just in front of the guardhouse.

“It truly is a community flagpole,” Men’s Coffee Group Treasurer Joe Landes said, adding the group raised $2,550 for the pole, several flags and landscaping in three weeks. “It happened so quickly, it’s overwhelming.”

The coffee group purchased an American flag and Missing In Action flag to place in Cascades’ clubhouse a few years ago. And at a recent meeting, group member John Sagar inquired about placing an American flag at the community’s entrance.

With a consensus to move forward, the group then took its proposal to place a 25-foot flagpole and 8-foot-by-10-foot flag in front of the guardhouse to the Cascades’ Homeowners Association for approval in March.
The pole was installed April 30.

The Men’s Coffee Group will maintain the flagpole and flag in perpetuity and will be responsible for lowering the flag to half-staff, when necessary, and handling and replacing tattered flags.
