+ Something fishy going on at Mote
Monday, Aug. 13, Mote Marine Laboratory put some new eggs in its basket. For the first time, the elusive convict fish’s eggs were photographed. Aquarist Michele Taylor was caring for the fish when she discovered the eggs. Dr. Eugenie Clark led the first published study of the secret life of the convict fish, a fish that spends life in its burrow, 16 years ago and continues to study them.

“We’ve been waiting years for this,” says Clark. “We went down right away and saw the cluster of eggs, then, by the time we got someone to photograph them, they weren’t there anymore — the fish moved them.”

The public can learn about this fish and see an adult convict fish in a specially designed exhibit called, “The Mysterious Convict Fish,” at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tickets are $17 for adults, $16 for seniors and $12 for kids, ages 4 to 12. Call 388-4441 for more information.
