Coastal Planning & Engineering Inc. (CP&E) President Tom Campbell will present the Longboat Pass Inlet Management Study at a special Longboat Key Town Commission workshop at 2 p.m. today.

The $125,000 study was jointly commissioned last year by the town and Manatee County to reveal why a channel in Longboat Pass is moving southward and what can be done to stop the island’s north-end erosion. Although a feasibility study of Longboat Pass was completed by the West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND), the study did not comprehensively address the restoration and preservation of the adjacent beaches.

The major components of the Inlet Management Study include numeric modeling to evaluate channel-dredging potential and structural options for the north end of the island and Beer Can Island stabilization to support beach stability at 360 North condominium and North Shore Road.

Also at today’s workshop, the commission will discuss the town’s current Comprehensive Beach Management Plan, which CP&E is updating and plans to present to the commission in February 2012.
