The Longboat Key Town Commission and a new subcommittee formed to implement a 25-year vision for the town both have new meetings scheduled this month at Town Hall.

The commission also has several scheduled executive sessions, which are closed to the general public, to discuss a new three-year contract for Longboat Key firefighters.

Also, a subcommittee made up of Vice Mayor David Brenner, Commissioner Jack Duncan and Planning and Zoning Board Chairwoman B.J. Webb and planning board member Leonard Garner will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, and 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 13.

+ North Shore Road beach access re-opens
The popular North Shore Road beach access was re-opened to the public at 9 a.m. Friday, July 1, in time for the Fourth of July weekend.

A $4.5 million north-end emergency beach project was completed earlier in the week. The project brought approximately 133,000 cubic yards of sand to the area.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said the amount of trash that was removed from the receptacles in the area Tuesday was an indicator of how popular the beach access’ re-opening was this wekeend.

Beachgoers are now able to access Beer Can Island by foot once again.
