In Class 4A-District 10, Lakewood Ranch defeated rival Braden River 6-2 in the district semifinals April 27. The Mustangs went on to finish as the district runner-up with a 5-4 loss to Seminole Osceola April 29.

The victim had employed the suspect for the past 16 months as a vet tech for the clinic. During that time, the suspect was responsible for maintaining and ordering the medication for the animals. The suspect's performance became poor, and he seemed to be under the influence of drugs while at work.
