OBITUARY | Ann Alexander Bean

Anne Alexander Bean, 88, of Longboat Key and South Orange, N.J., died June 6.

Born Feb. 27, 1920, after graduating from Brown University in 1948, Mrs. Bean married Kenneth Bean. She was married to her lifelong love and best friend for 65 years. She and Kenneth moved to New Jersey, where she taught elementary school but decided she preferred working with students one-on-one. She earned two master's degrees, one in learning disabilities from Bank Street College and one in education from Columbia University. She then established a thriving practice as an educational therapist from her home in Maplewood, N.J. She achieved success with many students, transforming many lives in the process.

Mrs. Bean played tennis and enjoyed traveling with her husband and children. In her retirement. She painted and took classes at the Longboat Key Education Center. She was a devoted mother and wife.

Mrs. Bean was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth. She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Douglas; three grandchildren; and two sisters.

A celebration of her life was held June 10, in Summit, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Bank Street College of Education.
