Festive event celebrates Italian culture and heritage

The tables were saturated in confetti, balloons spanned the room and guests couldn't turn off their excitement - Sarasota Italian Cultural Events, Inc., had transformed Michael's on East into little Italy for its 'Festa Siciliana' luncheon Wednesday, Feb. 9. Performers ranged from balloon crafting 'Juggles the Clown' (Jeff Lovett) to accordion player Mario DeLeon to Tarantella Dancers. In the past, proceeds have benefited Sarasota Opera, Ringling Museum and Big Brother Big Sister on the Gulfcoast.

The Lakewood Ranch High girls soccer team shut out rival Braden River 4-0 in a Class 4A-District 11 semifinal match Jan. 16. Lindsay Martinez notched her first two-goal match of the season to lead the way for the Lady Mustangs. Angelica Rego and Talia Falco each scored a goal. Goalkeeper Alex Latham had two saves. The Lady Mustangs fired off 17 shots - seven of which were on goal - while Braden River had five shots. Braden River goalkeeper Katerina Elliott had three saves. With the win, Lakewood will host No. 2 seed Venice in the district championship Jan. 18. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
