Sarasota residents who are “done with the gun” can turn firearms in to the Sarasota Police Department Saturday, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. May 13 at two locations in the city. The Done With the Gun firearm turn-in and free gun lock giveaway is a program offered by the Sarasota Police Department that allows residents to safely dispose of unwanted firearms.

The two drop-off locations are at SPD headquarters, 2099 Adams Lane, and SPD Substation, 1782 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

“We’re committed to keeping the city of Sarasota safe,” said Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche. “Part of that commitment is keeping unsecured and unwanted firearms out of the hands of children and possible criminals.”

Firearms must be unloaded with the safety engaged; be inside a bag, box, holster or case; and in the trunk or back of a vehicle. Police officers will accept non-working, antique, replica, pellet or BB guns, as well as ammunition. Upon arrival, the firearms must remain inside your vehicle; an officer will retrieve them.
