Update: The city hopes to restore water service tonight and reopen the road by tomorrow afternoon, according to a Twitter post.

Previously: A water main break has closed all lanes on a segment of the North Trail this afternoon, local officials announced.

At 1:44 p.m., the Sarasota Police Department announced officers had closed northbound lanes of U.S. 41 near 32nd Street to respond to the break.

By 3 p.m., the city announced that all northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 41 are closed between Myrtle Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. It is unknown when the water line will be repaired and the street will be reopened, according to a city Twitter post.

In addition to the street closure, there is heavy traffic along alternate routes in the area, the police department said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
