The Sarasota Police Department charged Daniel Cortez-Reyez, 19, with manslaughter after he allegedly killed his sister by accidentally shooting her.

The department announced the charges today following the death of Leticia Cortez, 20. The SPD announced yesterday they were investigating the shooting, but did not disclose the identity of the individuals involved.

A police investigation determined Cortez was home with her family eating dinner when her brother pulled out a semi-automatic handgun. Cortez-Reyes reportedly told officers he pulled the magazine out of the firearm, inserted the magazine and the weapon discharged. A single round struck Cortez.

Cortez was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Sunday and died from her injuries.

Cortez-Reyez is being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond. An investigation is still ongoing.

The Police Department received a request regarding the victim at 4:45 p.m., according to a release. The department believes it has identified all parties involved in the shooting, but the release did not disclose information regarding any of those individuals.

Officers determined a residence in the 2000 block of Arlington Street is possibly the location of the shooting, the release said. That block, located just east of U.S. 41, is in the Arlington Park neighborhood.

The victim is still at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and police are still investigating. The department did not disclose any additional details.

The department asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact Detective Anthony DeFrancisco at 954-7070.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
