Street closures planned for Fourth of July festivities

Throughout the city of Sarasota, the celebration of Independence Day will come with a series of closures.

Fourth of July road closures will begin today and continue through Monday night, as the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix and bayfront fireworks display help city residents ring in the holiday weekend.

The Sarasota Police Department has shared a list of street closures associated with the grand prix:

  • 10th Street, from U.S. 41 to the bayfront — 7 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Sunday
  • Lemon Avenue, from First Street to State Street — 10 a.m. to midnight Friday
  • Van Wezel Way, from East End to 10th Street — 3:30 to 11 p.m. Friday
  • Central Avenue, from Main Street to First Street — 3:30 to 11 p.m. Friday
  • Pineapple Avenue, from State Street to First Street — 3:30 to 11 p.m. Friday
  • Main Street, from Orange Avenue to Palm Avenue — 3:30 to midnight Friday

Centennial Park and the 10th Street Boat Ramp will be closed from 11:59 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Sunday. The south Lido overflow parking lot will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday. New Pass will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Lido Beach is closed from 11 p.m. to sunrise nightly from June 30 through July 10.

On Monday, the bayfront fireworks show will bring another major street closure to downtown Sarasota. U.S. 41 will close between Gulfstream Avenue to Orange Avenue from 7 p.m. to approximately 11 p.m.

The parking lot at Bayfront Park will be closed when the lot reaches maximum capacity, and parking on the grass area at the south end of the park is prohibited. The city will charge $5 to park at the Palm Avenue and State Street garages Monday.

The police department shared some tips for the holiday weekend, including information on a designated driver service and the AAA Tow to Go program. The SPD marine patrol also created a boating public safety video in advance of the Fourth of July.
