‘Cyrano de BurgerShack’

This modern-day version of Edmond Rostand’s ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ is reimagined to center around a love triangle in a burger shop, featuring hit contemporary pop songs. Runs through July 24.

 

‘How I Got Over: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson’

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe performs a tribute to the renowned “Queen of Gospel,” Mahalia Jackson and other great gospel singers. WBTT founder Nate Jacobs created and directs this tribute, in which singers bring passion and emotion to joyful gospel classics, such as “Move On Up a Little Higher” and “His Eye Is On the Sparrow.” Runs through Aug. 14.

Towles Court Art Walk

Pedro Arevalo has played with Dickey Betts and Great Southern, as well as with The Lotus Fire and Devon Allman’s Honeytribe. He’s known for his multi-instrumental, psychotropic sound, blending folk, ragtime, jazz, Delta blues, country and rock. Arevalo and local blues favorite RJ Howson will take the stage for an evening of high-energy entertainment.

Food Truck Rally

JDub’s hosts a gathering of local food trucks on the third Saturday of each month. Enjoy local craft beer and food from local vendors. This first-time event features BulGoGi Sarasota, Mouthole BBQ, Mother Truckin’ Good, Dashing Dingo Pizza Co. and Yummy Kebab.

 

Sarasota Improv Festival

HD at the Opera House: Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ from La Scala

Originally performed at La Scala in Milan, Italy in 1967 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of conductor Arturo Toscanini’s death, this production with the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro alla Scala was presented in Moscow, Montreal and New York, in addition to Milan. The film shows a young Luciano Pavarotti replacing Carlo Bergonzi, as well as soloists soprano Leontyne Price, mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto and bass Nicolai Ghiaurov.
