Commission postpones collecting legal fees from Jaleski

The Longboat Key Town Commission voted 7-0 Tuesday morning to postpone a decision on whether to collect more than $20,000 in legal fees that continue to accrue associated with a complaint Longbeach Village resident Gene Jaleski filed with the Florida Elections Commission last year.

Commissioners discussed the issue in a closed executive session with Town Attorney Maggie Mooney-Portale before entering the commission chamber just after 9 a.m. for a special meeting. Commissioner Lynn Larson moved to postpone the decision. The commission has until Feb. 28 to decide on the matter.

Jaleski believes the town broke the law by removing information from its website about a neighborhood undergrounding project last year. The Elections Commission disagreed and dismissed the complaint but has not yet ruled on another related complaint filed by Jaleski.

Jaleski said last week that by attempting to collect legal fees, the town is telling its residents they don’t have a right to dispute the town’s policies.

Before the vote, Jaleski told the commission: “I know I can be a real pain sometimes, but I really do have the best intentions. I don’t do things maliciously. I try to do the best I can.”

All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church dedicated a columbarium to its property Jan. 31.

The structure is the only columbarium open to the public on the Key.

Cost for a space is $2,000 for cremains of up to two people.
