+ Longboat Key recognized as 7th safest city in Florida
Data review and analysis firm ValuePenguin listed Longboat Key as the seventh safest city in Florida out of the 224 cities it compared.
The data were compiled through 2013 FBI crime statistics by city.
For cities with a population of less than 20,000, Longboat Key ranked No. 5. The Orchid Island town of Indian River Shores was ranked the safest of the 224 cities ranked.
+ Centre Shops evacuated after gas leak
The Centre Shops of Longboat Key, 5300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, was evacuated Jan. 2, after a worker accidentally struck a gas pipe while repairing asphalt, causing a gas leak.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene at 4:07 p.m. Firefighters determined the leak was coming from the back of the shopping center near the Wagner Realty office.
A representative from Teco Gas Co. responded to the scene and repaired the leaks. After the leaks were repaired, firefighters determined that the area was safe and it was reopened.
Police and firefighters were at the scene for one hour and 32 minutes.
+ Town to test utilities on Jungle Queen Way, Broadway
The town will conduct tests of the utility system the week of Jan. 12 on Jungle Queen Way and Jan. 19 on Broadway.
Town Manager Dave Bullock said the town is testing those streets because officials believe they’re the area where the greatest infiltration of groundwater in utilities occurs.
Tests will be conducted using a material that looks similar to smoke.
“The smoke will come out wherever there’s a broken sewer line,” Bullock told the Longboat Key Town Commission at its Jan. 5 regular meeting. “Most people who have a broken sewer line don’t know they have it.”
+ FDOT plans for Longboat Pass Bridge study in 2019
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) currently plans to conduct a project development and environment (PD&E) study to assess possibilities for replacing the Longboat Pass Bridge during fiscal year 2019.
Town Manager Dave Bullock told the commission of plans for the $2.3 million study at its Jan. 5 regular meeting.
A $1.5 million PD&E study of the Cortez Bridge began in January 2013 and is scheduled for completion this summer.
