Leading the way
Fifteen Sarasota County high school students received the Town Hall Scholarship Tuesday, at the Sarasota County School Board meeting.

The students, who were part of the 2014 Town Hall Scholars, each received a $2,000 scholarship for their continuing education. The Oberndorf Foundation and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County made the scholarships possible.

The Town Hall Lecture Scholars is small group of students who attended this year’s Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series and met with guest speakers before each lecture.

More than 60 students applied for the scholarships by submitting an essay. The 15 essay winners were honored for their leadership skills.

“You can be very proud of your students,” said Lou Oberndorf to the School Board. “They represent the very best in high school student leaders.”

The 2014 scholar recipients were Natalie Chait, Out-of-Door Academy; Makayla Myers, Sarasota High; Aubrey Roe, North Port High; Jillian Harvey, Riverview High; Sam Weaver; Riverview High; William St. Pierre, Pine View School; Shannon Hunihan, Sarasota Military Academy; Michaelah Park, Venice High; Donovan Keene, Sarasota High; Hunter Carpenter, Riverview High; Kemery Colbert, Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School; Nino Coutelle, Pine View School; Carlen Dickerson, Booker High; Carly Grimes, Pine View School and Rebecca Warner, North Port High.

Winning tournament
Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School hosted its first annual Cougar Corn Toss Tournament May 9. Fifty-six teams participated in the event, and together they raised more than $4,000 for the school. The tournament was held on the football field, and included a barbecue dinner donated by Darren Howard and Mark Miller.

Initiating respect
This year, Pine View School has taken the flag initiative to properly instruct its students on how to fold and handle the American flag. Earlier this month, members of Venice Middle School’s Young Marines Program and a group of local veterans visited Pine View for the students’ final lesson. They demonstrated how to fold the American flag to two classes of elementary school students.
