The Phillippi Shores Elementary School garden construction is under way.

This morning Chef Paul Mattison, Mattison's team members and volunteer mothers began laying dirt as part of the garden building process.

Paul Mattison, of Mattison's restaurant group, Phillippi created the educational vegetable garden as part of the Chefs Move to School Initiative. The garden will be volunteer maintained with Mattison overseeing the project. Mattison plans on growing hearty fall and winter vegetables later this month.

School teachers  will use the garden in their lessons in subject such as math and art,  and students will get the chance to eat things grown in the garden.

The garden consists of forty 4-feet by 8-feet plots, each plot will be adopted and cared for by a family. Members the school’s new Garden Club will also care for the garden.

“It's thrilling to see it come together," Mattison said. " We hope to save money, produce a better product and spark an interest in eating better."
