Sidelines: East County all-stars win district crowns

 East County all-stars win district crowns
The Braden River Little League Intermediate All-Stars defeated Manatee West 9-5 to capture the District 26 championship June 29, at Braden River Park.

BRLL outscored its opponents 34-11 over the course of the five-day tournament.

As the district champion, Braden River advanced to the Section 4 tournament July 5. The team opened the tournament with a 17-5 loss to New Tampa American Little League. Braden River responded with a 9-2 victory over Plant City, before falling to Bloomingdale 6-4.

Across town, Lakewood Ranch Little League defeated Braden River 8-4 to win the 9/10 championship July 5. Lakewood Ranch will open its Section 4 tournament against the District 4 champion at 7 p.m. July 12, at Lakewood Ranch Park.

Lakewood Ranch finished as the District 26 runner-up in the 10/11 division, behind district champion Buffalo Creek Blue.

+ Southwest Florida Figure Skating Club names officers
The Southwest Florida Figure Skating Club recently elected officers and board members for the 2013-14 season.

Officers include: Karen Chinault, president; Lisa Wenger, vice president; Whitney Glaser, treasurer; and Angie Ward, secretary.
Board members include: Nate Bartholomay, Amanda Evora, Judy Kreiling, Dana Opsincs, Kelly Paige, Jim Peterson, Jill Risalvato, Dana Savage, Christine Stevens, Laurel Vandawalker and Beth Vandroff.

The SWFFSC is a non-profit organization and a member of U.S. Figure Skating. The club is located at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex. The SWFFSC will host its annual Fall Classic figure skating competition Sept. 19 to Sept. 22.

Registration for amateur championships begins
Registration has begun for the Manatee County Amateur Golf Championships, which will be held Sept. 20 through Sept. 22.
The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 20, at The Manatee Golf Course. Play will continue at the Buffalo Creek Golf Course (Sept. 21) and River Wilderness Golf and Country Club (Sept. 22).

The tournament will feature a 54-hole stroke play, gross format. Players will be flighted within their division, after their first round is scored, based upon the number of players in the division.

Divisions include: Men’s Championship Open, Senior Men’s Championship (ages 50 and up), Women’s Open Championship and Senior Women’s Championship (ages 50 and up).

Tournament entry costs $125. The entry fee includes range balls, green and cart fees, a commemorative tee gift, a daily beverage ticket and lunch.

The deadline to register is Sept. 13.

+ Mustang cheerleaders to host summer camp
The Lakewood Ranch High cheerleading squad will hold a mini summer camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22 through July 24.

The camp, designed for students in first through eighth grades, offers participants the opportunity to learn some of the sideline skills Lakewood’s cheerleaders perform.

The cost is $75, and campers are required to bring their own lunch and water bottle.

+ i9 sports fall registration is currently under way
Registration for the upcoming i9 sports fall season, which includes flag football, soccer, basketball, cheerleading and T-ball, has begun.

The i9 sports fall season runs Sept. 28 through Nov. 16. Registration is open to players ages 3 to 14. Individuals who register on or before Sept. 1 will save $20.
