Bomb-squad called in to Sarasota Police Station

A suspicious looking package dropped near the Sarasota Police Department this afternoon has forced the city to close several downtown streets east of U.S. 301 near the station.

Sarasota Police Sgt. Paul Robinson told the Sarasota Observer the department’s bomb squad has been called in to survey the area and would be on scene by 4:30 p.m. The area around the police station, 2099 Adams Lane, Sarasota, is closed off to traffic

No further information about the situation, which was first reported around 2:15 p.m., is available at this time.
Employees of the police department have been evacuated from the building.
