The city of Sarasota and the Sarasota Police Department are inviting the public to attend the dedication of two memorials on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The dedications will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Sarasota Police Department, 2099 Adams Lane.
At 8:45 a.m., there will be a moment of silence to mark the time when American Airlines flight 11 hit the north World Trade Center tower.

A 14-foot long, twisted steel beam from the World Trade Center will be dedicated. This is a memorial to the first responders who lost their lives while saving others. The beam will sit on a concrete pedestal near the entrance to the Sarasota Police Department.

A memorial to Officer Warren David Jones, the only Sarasota Police Officer to be killed while serving the city, will be dedicated on that same morning. Officer Jones had served with the Sarasota Police Department for two years.

Both memorials, Sarasota Police Captain Paul Sutton said, serve as a reminder of the courage of public servants that risk and sometimes lose their lives while serving others.
