OBITUARY: Kathryn White Stewart

Kathryn White Stewart, 93, of Hilton Head, S.C. and formerly of Longboat Key, died May 2.

Born Jan. 17, 1918, in Peoria, Ill., she grew up in Washington, D.C., and was one of the few women in her generation to obtain both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While in graduate school, she met and married her first husband, Vincent Mckim “Mac” White, and the couple had three children.

In 1949, the Whites moved to India, where they lived for 19 years. The Whites were world travelers, also living in Spain and Saudi Arabia for a short time. After Mr. White’s death in 1983, she married former Longboat Key Mayor Carleton Stewart, who died in 2009.

Mrs. Stewart is survived by her children Lorenda Alice, Lynne Margaret and Vincent Mckim Jr.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
