+ Beach presentation now online at town website
Longboat Key residents who can’t make one of several scheduled beach presentations in the coming weeks at Town Hall can view a condensed version of the presentation online.

The town of Longboat Key posted the presentation on its website, www.longboatkey.org, Friday, informing residents why the beach and its $16 million beach project that will be on the March 15 ballot are important. Town Manager Bruce St. Denis narrates the presentation.

The presentation can be viewed directly by going to: http://www.longboatkey.org/tlbk_beach.htm.

The beach project includes construction of erosion-control structures on the north end of the island, as well as placing sand along Longboat Key beaches in certain high-erosion areas.

Residents and interested individuals are also encouraged to attend one of several Town Hall presentations (times can be found on the town’s website) scheduled for the upcoming weeks. The presentations will be held in the Longboat Key Commission Chambers, located at 501 Bay Isles Road.

Interested parties are also invited to contact Assistant to the Town Manager Susan Phillips to set up presentations to homeowner associations or civic groups. Phillips can be reached at [email protected] or at 316-1999, Ext. 243.

+ Beach project scheduled to begin this week
Slowly, but surely, a dredge is on its way to Longboat Key to pump sand onto the north end of the island.
An emergency beach project that will bring 133,000 cubic yards of sand to the north end will commence in early March, and a pipe will be laid out across the beach as early as next week.

The project was originally slated to begin in December, but the dredge has undergone maintenance, permitting and inspection delays.

Pedestrian and beach-access parking will be partially restricted during construction at the Broadway beach access. The North Shore Road beach access will remain closed until the beach is restored.
Sand will be placed on the beach from just south of Broadway to just north of the North Shore Road beach access near Beer Can Island. The project is expected to be completed in 90 to 120 days, weather permitting.

Beachgoers are advised to stay clear of construction equipment on the beach, exercise caution and respect access-restricted construction zones.

Town staff had been working to receive a permit from FDEP all year, which allows the town to rebuild the entire beach profile, or a 200-feet wide beach that used to exist in that area.
