Temple Sinai hosted its annual Jewish Food Festival Sunday, Jan. 13. Attendees sampled food from dozens of booths, which included traditional Jewish recipes. 'My recipe was passed down to me from my mother,' said Alan Fishbein. 'Back in those days, nobody measured, so it took me a few tries to get it down.' After sampling the many dishes, guests also had an opportunity to view local art and peruse the temple's used book sale.

The Out-of-Door Academy boys and girls soccer teams both notched victories over Sarasota Military Academy Jan. 8 on Senior Night. The Lady Thunder opened the night with a 4-1 victory over the Lady Eagles. Carly Hunter, Alli Gentile, Alyssa Mason and Juliet Onufrak each scored a goal for ODA. Hunter, Onufrak and Katie Lang were each credited with an assist. Lauren Gable scored the lone goal for SMA. Lady Eagles goalkeeper Ellie Waskom had 15 saves. The ODA boys soccer team followed up with a 2-1 victory of its own. Senior Hunter Clarke scored both goals for the Thunder. Goalkeeper Bryan Kirshe had seven saves. Logan Moriarty scored the lone goal for SMA. Eagles goalkeeper Garrett Ashley had six saves.

Despite a light rain, bluegrass musicians and fans gathered under the pavilion Thursday, Jan. 3 at Bee Ridge Park to stir up some home-cooked roots music as part of a weekly collaborative performance. According to guitarist Gary Miller, during season, when more musicians show up, the weekly event becomes more of an open jam session. 'I think we counted 15 guitars tonight,' said Miller, during a break. 'We just all take turns singing.' Musicians took turns playing bluegrass standards as the audience watched on from beneath the pavilion.
