Braden River High senior defensive end Kelvin Albritton recovered three fumbles as the host Pirates came away with a 20-12 victory over Booker in the preseason kickoff classic Friday night. Led by first-year head coach Curt Bradley, the Pirates took a 7-0 lead on 20-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Eric Schappacher to senior tight end Dylan Lee. Booker responded in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Marlon Mack, who transferred over from Sarasota. A blocked extra point left the Tornadoes trailing 7-6. Braden River junior running back Darius Jones scored from 3 yards out to give the Pirates a 13-6 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, Mack ran in from 12 yards out to pull the Tornadoes within a point. Booker's two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Tornadoes trailing 13-12 with 10:12 remaining in regulation. Schappacher scored from a yard out with 3:36 remaining to seal the victory for Braden River. The Pirates will open the regular season Aug. 31 at rival Lakewood Ranch while the Tornadoes will travel to Sarasota. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.

Sarasota High running back Rod Tullis scored three touchdowns, as the visiting Sailors defeated Lakewood Ranch 42-7 in the preseason kickoff classic Friday night. The Sailors, who were without head coach Ed Volz who was serving a one-game suspension for practicing twice in one day, scored on five of their first six possessions. Sarasota quarterback Hunter DeWitt scored on a 1-yard run with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter to give the Sailors an early 7-0 lead. Tullis scored on runs of 3 and 10 yards and DeWitt connected with Austin Leach for a 10-yard touchdown with 6.7 seconds remaining in the first half to give Sarasota a 28-0 halftime lead. Tullis added a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Lakewood got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jordan Wilson scored from a yard out. Sarasota responded when Leach ran back the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score. Lakewood will open the regular season at home Aug. 31 versus rival Braden River while Sarasota will host Booker in its season opener.

Longboat Key issues Isaac status update

Town Manager Dave Bullock issued a noon status update on Tropical Storm Isaac that expects the storm to be 150 miles off the coast of Longboat Key when it passes next week.
