Arts + Culture

"Art is a visual language. It's a way to think, a way to see the world and understand the world, which is different from words," Kurt Wenner says. "That was my greatest motivation — art was a way for me to understand the world." Courtesy.

Chalk of the Town: Kurt Wenner

Kurt Wenner was the only 3-D chalk artist when he began in the early '80s. Although he helped initiate most of the world's first chalk festivals, he hasn't contributed major art to one since 1995 - that is, until this year's fifth annual Sarasota Chalk Festival.

Music Review: Sarasota Opera's Fall Season

Sarasota Opera is about to open its fall season and it's doing it with a pair of operas - one old and one new.

"What I really enjoy is being a part of what the performers have to go through — being a performer, myself, I understand the discipline required," Ruthie Engford Clark says.

3 Things: Family-friendly homes

With so much of our housing stock built with retirees and snowbirds in mind, big family homes can be hard to find in Sarasota, particularly at a price that won't break the bank.

Film Theater: 'Let's Twist Again: with the Wanderers'

They're a hopping'' and a boppin' and a doo-woppin' at Florida Studio Theatre's Cabaret again this fall, and I haven't lost that lovin' feeling for four swoony guys in turquoise ties - call them the Wanderers, yeah, the Wanderers, they get around, etc.

PHOTO GALLERY: Zombie Pub Crawl

A Zombie walks into a bar. Actually, hundreds of zombies filled Gulf Gate area bars for the annual Zombie Pub Crawl on Saturday, Oct. 20. Sarasotans don't be weary, they were only costumes. People really got into the spirit of things and covered themselves in fake blood, guts and even prosthetic hands. There were zom-bees, zombie UPS men, sombie Elvis, zombie Sonny and Cher and even some normal-looking people dressed as sombie bait - there were zombies and fake blood everywhere. 'What do we want? Brains!' read one zombie's protest sign. And brains they got - via a brain eating contest. It was a fun evening with no zombie survivors, and can only be remembered with these photos and feint traces of fake blood.
