Bicyclist killed crossing US 301 in Sarasota

Sarasota Police continue to investigate a fatal collision between an SUV and a bicyclist on U.S. 301 on Saturday night.

A 51-year-old man died at the scene of the 8:30 p.m. incident, police said. There were no other injuries.

First responders were called to intersection of U.S. 301 and 21st Street on a report of a traffic incident. They found that the man had been riding west across the highway, in the middle of a block and without a helmet. He was hit by a small SUV heading north.

The 41-year-old woman behind the wheel of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperative with police, the SPD said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.
