Sam Michael Sciturro was born January 31, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, during the height of the Great Depression, the experience which shaped his entire life. His parents, Michael Sciturro (dec) and Rose Soranno Sciturro (dec) had immigrated from Sicily and maintained the strict, hard working ethics with which they were raised holding all seven of their boys to that standard. Sam worked with his father and brothers peddling fruit, selling newspapers, shoveling snow and doing whatever he could to bring money home for his family.
Sam enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was sent to Germany as occupation troops which he often described as 48 of the best years of his life. Once he returned to Detroit, he purchased his first business going on to expand into manufacturing and commercial real estate in the Detroit area and then bringing his talents to Florida, achieving great success in both of these fields in and around Sarasota.
He began his love for tennis and golf in his 40’s and belonged to clubs in Michigan as well as Prestancia, the Oaks Club and Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Florida. He especially loved playing golf but he loved the people he played with more. He truly cherished his golf buddies!
Sam is survived by his loving wife, Paricia Ann Summerlee-Sciturro, his daughter, Lita Ann Sciturro-Smith and husband Arthur Bruce Smith (dec), his granddaughter Stephanie Rose Palmer, his stepson Dr. Robert James Summerlee, his wife Melissa Simao, granddaughters Marin Simone and Keira Marie, his stepdaughter Elizabeth Ann Summerlee, her husband Matthew Thomas Waldstein and grandson Knox William. His grandchildren were the light of his life! He is also survived by many sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and dear, dear friends.
Sam died peacefully at home, as he had wished, on June 7, 2026, leaving a hole in our hearts but we know he is finally at peace.
A Funeral Mass will be Friday, June 12th at 11:00am, Our Lady of the Angels. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Empath Tidewell Hospice, 3550 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239.
