A 17-year-old cyclist from Manatee County was seriously injured in a crosswalk on Thursday morning when a vehicle struck him while turning from Erie Road to Fort Hamer Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The teen, who was not identified by name, was flown to HCA Florida Blake Hospital in Bradenton after the 7:10 a.m. incident.

Troopers said a Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by another 17-year-old, was heading east in the right turn lane of Erie Road when the SUV hit the victim, who was riding a electric bicycle.

According to the FHP, the SUV failed to yield the right of way to the victim as it turned right to Fort Hamer Road, hitting him.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate this crash.
