Success was plentiful for Riverview girls track and field at the FHSAA Class 4A-District 12 meet April 16, held at North Port High School. The Rams won seven different events, and Layla Obaseki contributed two first-place finishes. The freshman topped the podium in the 100-meter hurdles (16.77) and 400-meter hurdles (1:10.51) while competing in the first postseason meet of her career. Obaseki is the Sarasota Athlete of the Week.
What did you take away from your district meet performance?
I think it went OK. I could've run better 100 hurdles, because that's not usually my time. And the 400 hurdles was good.
Why do you enjoy competing with this team?
They're all nice, and it's a really fun team. It's great because people support each other.
What were your goals entering this season?
Just to have a good season. I didn't have any specific goals.
How have you been working to improve?
I've been focusing on hurdles — focusing on my form and stuff. I can run better with better form, and I don't really have the form down yet.
When and why did you start running track?
I got into the sport because my dad (Joey Obaseki) put me in it. I didn't really like it at first, but running with my friends made me like it more. Winning made me like it, too. I started in sixth grade.
Why have you stuck with this sport over the years?
My family motivates me. They're always supportive. And this sport makes me happy.
What quote or piece of advice have you always carried with you?
Don't give up, keep on going.
What's a fun fact about you not many people know?
I like to eat — a lot.
If you could go anywhere for a dream vacation, where would you go and why?
Paris. I want to see the Eiffel Tower so much.
If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you eat and why?
Taco Bell.
What music helps you get in the zone during practice or before a meet?
I don't listen to any.
Finish this sentence. Layla Obaseki is...
Nonchalant.
