Longboat cops respond to Jet Skiers gone wild in Sarasota Bay

Police were called on rogue Jet Skiers ignoring no wake zones. This and other Longboat Key Police reports in this week's Cops Corner.

Monday, Aug. 25

Suspiciously waiting

10:14 a.m., 5610 Gulf of Mexico Drive

Suspicious person: Police were called when a restaurant employee witnessed a man sitting at a table outside of the restaurant. The employee of the restaurant said they did not feel comfortable opening the restaurant with the man sitting out front. The suspicious and frightening sitter told police he was waiting for the business to open so he could place a lunch order. The prospective customer decided to take his business elsewhere.


Saturday, Aug. 23

Gate can’t stop weekend worker

9:40 a.m., 600 Bay Isles Parkway

Suspicious vehicle: The security guard at a gated community called the police after a contractor tried to gain access to a property on a Saturday. The security guard told police the flooring company contractor was informed there was a rule against contractor work on Saturdays and that he opened the gate to let him turn around. Instead, the contractor drove into the community to work. Police went to the address the contractor told the gate operator he was working at, but there was no sign of the vehicle or the elusive hard-worker.

Wednesday, Aug. 27

Gate stops cyclist

12:45 p.m., 600 Bay Isles Parkway

Property damage: A woman rode her bike into a security gate accidentally, knocking the arm off of the security gate assembly. The security guard working the gate told officers that the woman then picked up the gate to try to put it back in place, but while doing so unintentionally ripped all the LED light wires off of the arm, causing more damage. The woman’s name and phone number was shared with police and the HOA, who will be seeking compensation for the damage.


Tuesday, Aug. 26

Jetskis gone wild

5:26 p.m., 5285 Gulf of Mexico Drive

Reckless boat: A pack of wild Jet Skis were roaming in Sarasota Bay, ignoring no wake signs and prompting a call to the police. Officers responded to the scene and saw two Jet Skis about 100 yards offshore. A member of the group of jet skiers approached police, who informed the beachgoer of the laws regarding watercraft in no wake zones. One member of the group apologized and said he would make sure all jet skiers follow the rules.
