In recent weeks, city contractors have planted three dozen canopy trees in Sarasota neighborhoods while completing the planting phase of this year’s Neighborhood Canopy Program.
Participating homeowners received new trees standing 10 to 14 feet and 2 inches in diameter, immediately contributing to the city’s urban canopy. In addition to beautifying neighborhoods, the trees will help provide shade, filter stormwater runoff, clean the air, give shelter to wildlife and help deter the urban heat island effect.
For those who wish to participate next year, the Neighborhood Canopy Program will return in summer 2026. The cost to residents is $100 to have a canopy tree delivered and professionally planted between the front of their house and the street. The city pays any cost greater than $100.
