4:49 p.m., 5300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Animal Problem: An officer responded to a concerned citizen’s report of a cormorant tangled up in fishing line on a local pier. At the scene, the officer located the tangled-up bird and could remove the fishing line with a boat hook. The bird flew away on its own.
2:33 a.m., 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway
Suspicious Person: While patrolling the area, a Longboat officer noticed a suspicious man sitting under a gazebo in a parking lot. The man had several pieces of luggage and a backpack with him. When the officer approached, the man said he was moving out of his apartment on the island and was waiting to be picked up by his girlfriend. The man refused to give any other information, so the officer left the scene and allowed him to wait for his ride.
8:46 p.m., 3000 block of Harbourside Drive
Rescue Assist: Longboat Key Police Department personnel were sent to assist the Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department in a rescue call involving burn victims. Fire rescue personnel on scene advised the responding officer a woman attending a wedding got too close to a candle, which ignited her dress and caused burn injuries requiring immediate attention. A second victim also had burn injuries, both were transported to a nearby hospital.
1:10 p.m., 800 block of Broadway Street
Citizen Assist: An officer on marine patrol was flagged down by a restaurant staff member who said a boat crashed into the restaurant’s dock and parked offshore without leaving any contact information. The staff member said he did not believe the crash was a criminal act, but wanted the boater's contact information to repair the dock. The officer then located the boat offshore and spoke to the vessel's captain. The captain said, while he was unloading passengers at the dock, he throttled too much but did not believe he had caused any damage to the dock. But he did point out some scratches on his vessel. The captain said he intended to return to the restaurant to exchange contact information, but he ran out of fuel. The officer returned to the restaurant and gave this information to the staff member, who was appreciative of the help.
1:11 a.m., 500 block of Harbor Point Road
Suspicious Incident: A resident called to report that someone suspicious rang her doorbell and told her they had a work order for her address. The responding officer was able to locate a utility worker nearby who said he accidentally went to the wrong address when he arrived at the scene.
7:46 p.m., 4600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive
Disturbance: A resident called to report a verbal dispute she had after finding a vehicle parked on private property. According to the report, the woman called the number she found on a business card on the vehicle’s dashboard, which indicated the vehicle belonged to a limousine company. The man behind the number responded via text and called her profanities. When the driver returned to the vehicle, he continued to call her profanities, according to the complainant. The woman was unable to get a license plate number as the man drove away. The officer determined the dispute was strictly verbal and no threats were made, so no further police action was needed. But the officer helped show the woman how to block a phone number.
