BRHS bans together to raise money for the Carrier family

The school hosted a Lip Sync Battle, which benefited Band Director Kendall Carrier and his family.

After losing one son, Zachary, who was just 22 years old, to cystic fibrosis in 2014, Kendall Carrier couldn't fathom anything worse happening to his family.

That was until a few months ago, when his 21-year-old son, Kris, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Carrier and his wife, Kerrie, who are both music teachers at Braden River High School, have been regularly driving to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa for Kris' chemotherapy treatments.

He will also need a bone marrow transplant, and medical bills are staggering, Kendall Carrier said.

To help raise money for the Carrier's medical bills, Braden River High Student Government  Association students came up with the Caring for the Carriers Lip Sync Battle event, which was held March 11.

"We can't begin to express our gratitude for this event and all of the enormous work that went into planning and preparing it," Kerrie Carrier said.

The auditorium hosted 16 performances from students and faculty members, such as Assistant Principal Don French, who performed "Soul Man" by the Blues Brothers.

The $5 admission fee and proceeds from the 35 auction items that lined the walls of the auditorium benefited Kris Carrier's medical treatment fund.

"We are here as a family to support a family," French said. "This event is the basis of what our school is all about: family."
