Sarasota Orchestra celebrates co-founder and Artistic Director Laureate Paul Wolfe's 90th birthday with a performance of a series of pieces related to remembrance and homage. Featured music includes Mozart's Duo No. 1 in C Major, Beethoven's Oboe Quartet in F Major and Robert Levin's Homage à Paul Wolfe.

Comedian and radio host Lynne Koplitz is known for her featured role in Jenny McCarthy's comedy special and radio show, her role as host on "Star Talk" with Neil deGrasse Tyson, her Comedy Central standup special and a feature-film appearance in Chris Rock's film "Top Five." She brings her act to McCurdy's through Sunday, June 26.

 

'Underneath the Lintel'

In this play by Glen Berger, a librarian discovers a book in his return bin that is 113 years overdue. A note in the margin leads him on a whirlwind adventure to discover the secrets of the book and its borrower — an adventure that traverses the globe and the length of a millennium. Runs through Sunday, June 26.

Songwriting duo Alone Together makes its first appearance at Libby's. Their music combines jazz and rock with classical music and musical theater. Take in the performance and enjoy the full Libby's Cafe + Bar menu along with craft brews and custom cocktails from the L-Bar.

In the third week of the Sarasota Orchestra student recital series, students play musical works of their own choosing.

 

'Dry Land'

8 p.m. at Urbanite Theatre, 1487 Second St.

"Dry Land," a play by Ruby Rae Spiegel, makes its regional premiere at Urbanite. Set in a high school girls' locker room, it portrays an unlikely friendship between two teenage girls. The play tackles tough topics, such as female sexuality, eating disorders, suicide, bullying and reproductive rights and depicts the incredible pressure of contemporary teenage life. This play contains mature content.

 

'Back to the Future'

A select group of Sarasota Orchestra student ensembles showcase the future of classical music with their performances of several short chamber works. Enjoy student performances of such pieces as Beethoven's String Quartet in F Major, Reger's Serenade in G Major, Robert Levin's chamber arrangements of the Beatles songs "In My Life" and "She's Leaving Home," and Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 2 in G Minor.

 

Women of Craft Beer June Mixer

Attend an informative meeting of women who love craft beer, led by Megan from Cigar City Brewing and Molly from Brew Bus Brewing. Festival Artistic Director Robert Levin performs the finale of Sarasota Orchestra's festival season on the piano. Levin, known for his ability to channel Mozart, plays the composer's passionate Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor. Levin will also play Vivaldi's Concerto in F Major and Schubert's Symphony No. 6 in C Major.

 

SUNDAY, JUNE 26

Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix Festival Car Show

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lakewood Ranch Main Street, 8100 Lakewood Ranch Blvd.

The Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix Festival's car show features displays of classic cars, trophies, prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit Suncoast Charities for Children.

 

HD at the Opera House: Rossini's 'La Cenerentola'

1:30 p.m. at Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Ave.

The Sarasota Opera House, as part of the HD at the Opera House series, will screen "La Cenerentola," Rossini's operatic version of the Cinderella story, as performed at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. This is one of Rossini's funniest operas, but it also has a serious side, placing the heroine in considerable peril.

The Players Centre for Performing Arts hosts a stage reading of the winners of a local playwriting contest. Five winners were chosen, and they will be read, one per night, through July 1. One winner will be chosen out of these five; this play will be produced next summer.

 

TUESDAY, JUNE 28

Conversation about Nazi-Era Looted Art

The Ringling Museum of Art conducts an informative discussion about works of art looted by Nazi Germany during the Second World War, many of which, through the collaborative efforts of museums and scholars, have been returned to their original owners. This includes a discussion of what Ringling researchers, led by Lauren vonBechmann, have discovered about the museum's own collection.

 

Grand Prix By the Sea Festival Kickoff Party

This party kicks off the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix festival, which runs through Sunday, July 3. The kickoff party features live music by Kettle of Fish, an open bar, food, silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds benefit Suncoast Charities for Children.

Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art

This art exhibition explores the relationship between mind, body and spirit through a selection of pieces in a variety of media, including painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation, divided into four themed sections. The exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville and will be at the Ringling Museum of Art through Sept. 11.
