The memory of Riverview High School alumnus Andrew Monroe lives on with the 5K in his memory every year.

This year marked the 3rd annual Andrew Monroe Memorial 5K with more than 280 participants and supporters hitting the sand of Siesta Key Beach Jan. 9.

Monroe is remembered as student athlete who enjoyed playing soccer for the RHS Rams team. Following a fatal car accident in 2011 his family set up a scholarship fund in his name to help any future RHS soccer athletes attend and complete college.

His mother Stacey Monroe organizes the 5K and one-mile fun run to collect funds for the scholarship.

"I was humbled to see every one support me year after year," Stacey Monroe said. I could not do this without them on race day. I want Andrew's memory and legacy to provide scholarships for students for years to come."
