Sarasota County has issued a boil-water advisory for about 1,500 south Siesta Key properties after three valves in the county's system broke during routine maintenance Friday.

"While the advisory is in effect, customers are advised to boil all tap water intended for drinking, preparation of food, washing of food utensils or for first aid, making sure the water is brought to a rolling boil for one minute," according to a county news release. "Boiling your tap water disinfects it, destroying any harmful microorganisms."

The county has notified the affected properties using its CodeRED automated phone system, and will issue an all-clear message when the advisory is lifted.
