Lights, camera, action! In 1983 the Crescent Beach Club was the set of a scene for the film “A Flash of Green” that was based on a book by John MacDonald. The film follows actor Ed Harris who portrays a local reporter in 1960s Florida who sympathizes with an eco-group opposing a new development, but a local county commissioner attempts to quiet him with a bribe. Residents were hired as extras and paid $10 for their acting.

In 1996 Sarasota County commissioners voted in favor of a new 72,446-square-foot central county library in the heart of downtown Sarasota. That library is now known as Selby Public Library. The decision came with a 4-1 vote in favor of the downtown library and also for a new East Sarasota library near Fruitville Road and I-75.
