Although oil from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico never made its way to Manatee County’s waters, the Manatee County commission Wednesday agreed to accept a $1.44 million settlement related to the incident.

The commission, which is on summer recess until next week, held a special meeting to accept mont for “Manatee County’s economic losses and as full and final settlement of all claims against BP and others resulting from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill,” a resolution states. The county will receive the money in the fall after BP signs the paperwork.

The payment amount is related to the loss of tax revenues that the county would have received if economic development had occurred.
